Abstract

Arashiyama 2

I left really early in the morning to get to the famous Arashiyama bamboo grove in Kyoto, Japan, but I got a bit lost and ended up arriving about 45 minutes later than planned. By that time there were already some tourists around and I couldn't get the tourist-free shots that I wanted. So instead I started shooting off to the sides, into the forest, and tried some camera movement as well.

Rideau Falls

Rideau Falls is a waterfall conveniently located in the city of Ottawa. There were a lot of distractions in the background of most images that I tried to make, so I went with this more close-up view to cut out the clutter. The ridge that runs along the top adds a nice dynamic line that draws the eye into the image.

Swirl

Camera movement on a really colourful tree outside of Bracebridge, Ontario. I wasn't happy with most of the "normal" compositions that I tried, so I experimented with some camera movement. This allowed me to capture what I thought was most important; the amazing colours of the tree.

Blue Ice

I was out trying to get some sunrise landscape shots of the spring ice melting on Lake Winnipeg. I didn't get a wide landscape shot that I was happy with, but I was really happy with this close-up shot of some ice patterns near the shore.

Moonlight

This was taken at Island Lake, Manitoba. As the light disappeared I started doing slightly longer exposures of the moonlight reflecting off the lake.

Frosty Morning 1

There were some amazing ice patterns on the window one winter morning. I had to work fast since the opening of my inner window caused the frost to slowly melt while I was shooting with a macro lens.

Vermont Reflections 1

Elmore Lake in Vermont has some excellent foliage in the fall. Here I focused on a single leaf that was floating in the water that was reflecting the colours.

Grey Day

A long exposure of patterns reflected in the waves of Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell Park of Manitoba. This was not converted to black and white; it was a gray overcast day.

Spark

I set my camera on burst mode and took a bunch of photos of a campfire at a friend's cabin. It was tricky because it was dark but the fire was moving really quickly. I liked this shot with the small ember/spark shooting out to the left.

Under the Surface

A close-up shot of some ice patterns that I saw while out for a sunrise photo session on Lake Winnipeg in the winter, at Winnipeg Beach, Canada. It never hurts to look down after trying to get an epic wide angle landscape shot.

Liquid Fire

Taken at Nagoya Castle, Japan. This was near the end of the day when I saw the moat reflecting one of the small outer towers with golden sunset light shining onto it.

Red Ladders

Looking up at Tokyo Tower in Japan. I got a few shots of the tower during the evening, but my favourite shot was this abstract shot looking up at one of the pillars.

Bubbles

Playing with focus on a set of tiny lights below the Tokyo Tower in Japan. This was a walkway covered with tiny lights but I couldn't get the shot I wanted because there were always people in the frame. I decided to change strategy and do some out of focus work with the lights.

Reflections on Longbow Lake, Ontario, Canada, during an exceptional sunset.

Liquid Silver

This isn't actually black and white, it was just an overcast day. I was on a dock on Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell taking abstract shots of the black line in the water when I saw this water beetle speeding across the surface.
