Light the Way

This is some of the amazing architecture at the Holocaust memorial in Ottawa, Canada. I've been here a few times and I seem to find a new angle to photograph the buildings from every time.

Up to the Finial

I found this staircase by surprise while I was on a visit to Brockville, Ontario to photograph their underground train tunnel. Regarding the name, I just looked up the parts of a staircase and liked the word finial.

Grandeur

This is St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan, New York. I was able to get a couple shots with a tripod before security made me go handheld, but at least I got a few at a low ISO and sharp aperture so that this will make a nice clean large print.

Lanterns

This was an area of the hostel I stayed in while in the old town of Pingyao, China. It has one of the best preserved old towns in China and also a gigantic, fully intact city wall. This was a very laid back and enjoyable town in China and should be part of any itinerary.

The Mothership

There's something almost extraterrestrial about this shot. This is the vestibule at the Natural History Museum in Ottawa, Canada. The red "alien" in the centre is a giant balloon that cycles through different colours.

Jagged Spiral

I did some research on Montreal, Canada before I went, to see if I could find some good sites to photograph. This is a hidden away staircase at a university.

The Eye

This is the dome at the Manitoba Legislative Building in Winnipeg, Canada. This building is one of the nicest buildings in Canada. I've been there taking photos many times, but didn't "see" this shot until my last trip there, before moving to Ottawa.

The Blue Bridge 2

This is in Singapore near the famous lion mermaid water fountain. I also have a horizontal version posted and I can't decide which I like better. Feel free to send me a message and let me know which one you prefer!

OAG 2

This is the amazing wooden staircase in the Ontario Art Gallery. If you visit, be sure to enjoy yourself, since the entry fee is an eye-watering $25.

Pool of the Black Star

This is the lower level of the Manitoba Legislative Building in Winnipeg, Canada. As the title suggests, this room is called the Pool of the Black Star. If you stand on the star you can look all the way up to the dome of the upper level.

The Bayon

This is a temple called The Bayon, located in the Angkor area of temples in Cambodia. There are 216 of these giant stone heads, presumably fashioned in the likeness of the king at the time. They are about 2.5 meters tall and wandering around the temple is an amazing experience. Angkor Wat gets a lot of the attention at Angkor but there are other Wats (temples) that are just as interesting.

Greek and Roman

This is a long Roman building in the centre of Athens, Greece. I believe it dates from around the 1st century A.D.

The Tower

The Lighthouse, centre for design and architecture, in Glasgow, Scotland. It was much easier to get this shot from the bottom of the staircase; when I was shooting from the top there were always people walking on the stairs, shaking my tripod and getting in the shot.

Starry Ceiling

The ceiling of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Ottawa, Canada. I had to shoot quickly as I was getting late for an appointment, but I would like to go back and try some more ideas with this amazing ceiling that looks like stars in the sky.

Spiral

I had seen this staircase online while searching for photo spots in Ottawa, Canada, before my trip there. I thought that I might be able to get an interesting shot of it. I ventured over to Carleton University in my rental car and took a few wide-angle shots and liked how this one turned out, with the lights on the bottom of the stairs.

Tunnel Vision

At the "Diefenbunker", an underground bunker created for the Canadian government in the event of nuclear war. It's about half an hour from Ottawa near the town of Carp. This was definitely something to see and I'm surprised it doesn't feature more prominently in travel brochures. This is a panorama of the blast tunnel that would direct a nuclear blast away from the main structure.

Spiral Staircase 1

Saw this staircase online, found a contact name, was allowed to photograph for 10 minutes, so I had to work fast! Turned out I had about 45 minutes as the contact person didn't kick me out. I didn't notice or think about moving the black mat at the bottom, but I probably shouldn't have started messing around with things when they were nice enough to let me in to shoot.
