Rideau Falls

Rideau Falls is a waterfall conveniently located in the city of Ottawa. There were a lot of distractions in the background of most images that I tried to make, so I went with this more close-up view to cut out the clutter. The ridge that runs along the top adds a nice dynamic line that draws the eye into the image.

Labyrinth 1

This is a hidden gem right next to where I live in Ottawa, Canada. While walking in the neighbourhood I saw a sign for labyrinth walks in this little church. I went in to see what they were talking about and I saw this huge maze underneath the church pews. They do labyrinth walks once a month and I got permission to take some photos before the participants arrived. I was trying out my new Voigtlander 12mm lens for the first time and I was glad I had it to fit everything in.

Slow Lean

A friend of mine told me about this house and I took a little road trip out to shoot it. It's a three hour drive from Winnipeg so it was an overnight trip. To make the sky blue, I inverted the slight amount of red colour that my infrared (converted) camera captures.

Magical Oak

This is one of the giant Live Oaks (it's not called that because it's alive, it's actually the name of the type of oak) at Oak Alley Plantation. These trees are massive and the branches can grow down to the ground, as you can see in the background here. Using the infrared camera gave the image a nice effect.

Snowfall

This was taken outside of a museum in Montreal, Canada. I saw these snow covered tables from inside and went to take some photos after I was finished looking around the museum. This was a bit of a trial because it was getting dark, so I had to use a tripod, the snow was really deep (going into my boots), and it was about -30 Celsius. My hands got pretty frozen but it was such a unique scene that I feel it was worth it.

Jagged Spiral

I did some research on Montreal, Canada before I went, to see if I could find some good sites to photograph. This is a hidden away staircase at a university.

The Escalator

This is the fairly long escalator near the top of the Umeda Sky Building in Osaka, Japan. Don't go on it if you're scared of heights. I used a wide angle lens to accentuate the curve of the railings.

Miyazaki Shrine

This is an infrared shot of Miyazaki Shrine in Miyazaki, Japan. I highly recommend going in the evening when these lanterns come on, and amazing, none are burnt out. I'm not sure if it was low season, but I had this place all to myself. Even though it was dark, I tried some infrared shots and liked them better than the colour ones. I was shooting with a 680nm infrared filter/camera, so some colour still comes through and I liked the light retained from the lanterns.

Window

I had been shooting sunrise at this old abandoned house when I saw this shadow as I was packing up to head back home. I walked over to the best viewpoint and took a few more shots of this shadow effect before I left.

Winter Rainbow

I was on a trip to find snowy owls to photograph but I saw this effect in the sky and had to stop for a photo. There was a -35C windchill; I was frozen after only a minute or two.

Branches

It's quite hard to get the starburst effect when shooting in infrared (IR). I had to continually make minor adjustments to avoid flare; and with the sun slowly moving through the sky it makes it extra frustrating. This was with an IR converted camera, which makes it easier since I can see through the viewfinder rather than having a filter screwed on the front, rendering the viewfinder almost completely black. This was taken on the grounds of the Legislative Building in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Oak Alley

This is Oak Alley Plantation in Louisiana. It's a strange feeling trying to photograph there because the trees are so beautiful but the history is so ugly. As always, I find shooting trees in infrared is my preference.

Sunset In Black and White

This was an interesting shot as the sun must have been obscured by atmospheric haze allowing the camera to capture it as a sphere.

Overgrown

This is an old railway bridge in rural Ontario, Canada. The plants that are growing over the tracks are well represented with an infrared camera.

Perseverence

Break and Enter

This looked like the tree had slowly broken through the window and left the window frame lying on the floor.

Spiral Staircase 4

Saw this staircase online, found a contact name, was allowed to photograph for 10 minutes, so I had to work fast! Turned out I had about 45 minutes as the contact person didn't kick me out. I didn't notice or think about moving the black mat at the bottom, but I probably shouldn't have started messing around with things when they were nice enough to let me in to shoot.

Infrared Plymouth

I tried to get some nice shots of the last rays of sunset hitting the car but I wasn't happy with the results that day. I switched to my infrared camera and wide angle lens for an interesting composition close to the camera. With the low light it was a long exposure. I had to try a couple shots as infrared light is a different length than regular light so focus can be a bit off if you don't compensate.
