Rideau Falls

Rideau Falls is a waterfall conveniently located in the city of Ottawa. There were a lot of distractions in the background of most images that I tried to make, so I went with this more close-up view to cut out the clutter. The ridge that runs along the top adds a nice dynamic line that draws the eye into the image.

Slow Lean

A friend of mine told me about this house and I took a little road trip out to shoot it. It's a three hour drive from Winnipeg so it was an overnight trip. To make the sky blue, I inverted the slight amount of red colour that my infrared (converted) camera captures.

Window

I had been shooting sunrise at this old abandoned house when I saw this shadow as I was packing up to head back home. I walked over to the best viewpoint and took a few more shots of this shadow effect before I left.

Winter Rainbow

I was on a trip to find snowy owls to photograph but I saw this effect in the sky and had to stop for a photo. There was a -35C windchill; I was frozen after only a minute or two.

Branches

It's quite hard to get the starburst effect when shooting in infrared (IR). I had to continually make minor adjustments to avoid flare; and with the sun slowly moving through the sky it makes it extra frustrating. This was with an IR converted camera, which makes it easier since I can see through the viewfinder rather than having a filter screwed on the front, rendering the viewfinder almost completely black. This was taken on the grounds of the Legislative Building in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Sunset In Black and White

This was an interesting shot as the sun must have been obscured by atmospheric haze allowing the camera to capture it as a sphere.

Overgrown

This is an old railway bridge in rural Ontario, Canada. The plants that are growing over the tracks are well represented with an infrared camera.

Break and Enter

This looked like the tree had slowly broken through the window and left the window frame lying on the floor.

Spiral Staircase 4

Saw this staircase online, found a contact name, was allowed to photograph for 10 minutes, so I had to work fast! Turned out I had about 45 minutes as the contact person didn't kick me out. I didn't notice or think about moving the black mat at the bottom, but I probably shouldn't have started messing around with things when they were nice enough to let me in to shoot.

Infrared Plymouth

I tried to get some nice shots of the last rays of sunset hitting the car but I wasn't happy with the results that day. I switched to my infrared camera and wide angle lens for an interesting composition close to the camera. With the low light it was a long exposure. I had to try a couple shots as infrared light is a different length than regular light so focus can be a bit off if you don't compensate.

There were some amazing ice patterns on the window one winter morning. I had to work fast since the opening of my inner window caused the frost to slowly melt while I was shooting with a macro lens.

Roof Tiles

A stack of ceramic roof tiles in Pingyao, China. I think I may have been the only one taking a shot of these tiles on the side of the road. I'm sure the locals must have thought I was strange.

Tree Line

Liquid Silver

This isn't actually black and white, it was just an overcast day. I was on a dock on Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell taking abstract shots of the black line in the water when I saw this water beetle speeding across the surface.

Monochrome Wave

I've been back to the East side of Lake Winnipeg about seven times now trying to get the shot I'm envisioning of a backlit wave. I still don't have the shot I want, but I was happy with this one as a black and white shot.

The Twisted Forest

I was calling this place the Twisted Forest until I spoke to some locals and saw some signs; they call it the Crooked Bush. This little group of trees grows in all sorts of crazy directions while the surrounding trees are all perfectly straight. There are several theories about why the trees grow like this, from genetics all the way to a UFO visit in the past. In my opinion, if you're travelling through Saskatchewan this is not to be missed. It is a short drive northwest of Harris. It's a short boardwalk through the area but I was there for hours taking photographs. (A lot of time was spent switching lenses since I only have one wide angle lens but I kept changing between my regular camera and my infrared camera.)
