New Orleans - February 2005
We (my friends Jason and Alex, and I) went to New Orleans right after Mardi Gras because this coincided with my spring break from university. I had an exam on the last day before the break and the first day back so it wasn't possible to skip school and see Mardi Gras. (That's ok though because apparently it is more hassle than it's worth.) It was a 30 hour drive to get down there. We were there in February and the hurrican went through in August. But apparently the French Quarter was not harmed (it is the oldest area of the city and was built on high ground, due to the history of hurricanes and flooding).
New Orleans is my favourite place that I've ever been. Mostly because of the old buildings and all the character they have. But the food, little bars, music, and people are all also great. You can drink alcohol on the street in the French Quarter and we saw all the girls flashing their breasts for beads. We got hopelessly lost on the first night, for hours; I took a photo of the laundromat we passed about four times. The Garden District was beautiful and I can understand why so many famous people live there. The above ground cemetaries were also very picturesque somehow (they can't bury people because during floods the bodies end up floating down the streets). If you go definitely check out Fiorella's restaurant near the French Market! The building is in the process of falling down but the food is amazing. At another restaurant we ordered alligator but they didn't bring it out and we were already full so we didn't bother asking for it. We went on a ghost tour which was pretty interesting and also found out how expensive some of the real estate is in the French Quarter. We also tried our first absinthe at The Pirate Bar (where we stopped by at nightly), absente, not a very good one and not actually a real one, but we didn't know it at the time.
We stopped in at Austin, Texas to visit our friend Phil. He took around and showed us the university and it's museum and to some pubs at night. Overall a great trip.
