Slovakia
I was in Slovakia for a week. The entire central European part of the trip was quite quick actually because I had certain things to see in each country. In Slovakia my main goal was to visit the village where my grandmother was born. Needless to say it's not in a very touristy area and finding someone that spoke English was quite difficult. Thank you Martina for helping me out in my time of need! The village is in the northwest of the country near the Polish border. It was actually flooded in 1953 so what I was visiting was "the church on the hill" as my grandmother describes it, which is now a church on an island. Behind the church there is a very small cemetery and I found the graves of two of my ancestors from the 1850's. South of there is Oravski Hrad, an amazing castle. Then I went east to Levoca, a really nice old town near Spisski Hrad. Otherwise known as Spis Castle, it is recommended as the thing to see if you only have time to see one thing. Slovakia is another one of those countries that isn't overrun by tourists yet.
